Where the name comes from and what it means today
If you ask a motorsport fan today what the word racing team means, the answer is invariably linked to the major Formula 1 teams of the modern era especially Ferrari, though it applies to any racing team. While the term has undoubtedly become synonymous with Formula 1 today, its origins are somewhat more varied. In the early days of motorsport, the term referred not only to factory teams but also to private organizations.
It was quite common for groups of amateur drivers or “gentleman drivers” to band together into a single team for various reasons: initially due to personal affinity, but also for the obvious advantages of centralizing organization, mechanics, purchasing, maintenance, logistics, and so on.
By forming a racing team, they could achieve greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness. “Scuderia Ferrari” itself began this way; however, thanks to Enzo Ferrari’s exceptional organizational skills, it evolved into the de facto official Alfa Romeo team within just a few years. Over the years, various private teams gained renown such as Scuderia Centro Sud, Scuderia Ambrosiana, and Scuderia Filipinetti, to name a few. Historic motorsport is no stranger to this long-standing tradition; in Italy, in particular, the presence of teams like Scuderia Brescia Corse or Scuderia Loro Piana has become a fixture at major events.
The spirit, however, remains the same as it was at the beginning: getting together with friends, uniting under a shared name, and enjoying historic motorsport with a team-oriented approach where camaraderie and good vibes prevail among everyone involved.
