THE 1000 MILLAS SPORT COMMITMENT

Banco de Alimentos Foundation

Helping those who suffer

The Food Bank is a non-profit organization that helps reduce hunger, malnutrition, and food waste. With the clear mission of “Helping those who suffer from hunger,” the foundation receives donations of food that for various reasons cannot be sold commercially but remain safe for consumption. It sorts and stores these items with the help of thousands of volunteers and subsequently distributes them to soup kitchens and other community organizations.

It currently helps feed more than 100,000 people through 809 organizations in the City of Buenos Aires and Greater Buenos Aires. Over the past year, it distributed more than 4,300,000 kilograms of food and products, thanks to donations from companies, supermarkets, and agricultural producers.

Origin of the model

A bit of history

The food bank management model originated in the United States in the 1960s, serving as a link between food producers and distributors and people suffering from hunger. Today, more than 500,000 tons of food are distributed annually, and over 500 food banks operate worldwide, helping to feed more than 20 million people.

The Buenos Aires Food Bank made its first delivery in April 2001.

This initiative was the result of efforts by a group of people concerned about the constant daily food waste occurring at a time when hundreds of families needed help securing their daily meals. Since then, the organization has grown steadily; over the past 15 years, the Food Bank has distributed 40 million kilograms of food.

The alliance

The 1000 Millas Sport and the Banco de Alimentos

Since 2009, the CAS has supported the Food Bank during the 1000 Millas Sport event.

As part of this partnership between sports and philanthropy, the Food Bank organizes auctions featuring artworks donated by renowned artists who lend their talent and professionalism to the cause. Held during the race, these auctions aim to raise awareness about hunger while offering a solution and inviting people to play an active role in it.

The auctions feature a high-quality art catalog where companies can participate through various advertising opportunities. This adds a compelling artistic dimension to the conclusion of the race while opening up an avenue for charitable involvement that is open to everyone.

Furthermore, the CAS is committed to the local community; for each edition of the event, it selects a beneficiary organization in Bariloche to receive a percentage of the proceeds.

There is still much to be done to reach our ultimate goal, and experience has shown that the journey is easier when more people join the effort. None of this would be possible without the support of the CAS, the race entrants, the artists, and everyone associated with the 1000 Millas Sport who supports the Food Bank in one way or another. There is a long road ahead, and the foundation looks forward to continuing its work alongside this community to help alleviate a problem that affects our society.
